What's the purpose of the springs of spring energized ptfe seals

Springs are used to provide load around the sealing circumference and make the sealing lip tightly adhere to the surface of the shaft. Some designs use finger spring designs that only provide independent finger action in the required area, rather than clamp springs that apply pressure around the shaft.
