Definition of Rubber Valve Seat

Rubber valve seats are physically small, but they're critical for proper valve functioning. These molded rubber parts or rubber-to-metal bonded assemblies play a key role in a wide range of applications and help to ensure everything from proper airflow to emergency shutoff. Rubber valve seats create a tight seal between a valve and its other components in the air flow. They prevent leaks and ensure that fluids and gases remain where they belong without causing unwanted pressure drops or contamination.

Rubber valve seat, used on butterfly valve, there are pure rubber, PTFE bonded rubber, metal bonded rubber.
Different brand has different structure of the rubebr valve seat in details. Even the same size, it may be leakage.

Benefits of Rubber Valve Seat

Tight Shutoff and Sealing Integrity: One of the primary advantages of quality butterfly valve seats is their ability to provide a tight shutoff and superior sealing integrity. When the valve is closed, the center ensures a complete seal against the disc, preventing any leakage or flow through the pipeline. High-quality valve seats are designed with precision and manufactured using durable materials, ensuring an effective and leak-free seal even under high-pressure conditions.

Wear Resistance and Longevity: Quality butterfly valve seats are constructed from resilient and wear-resistant materials such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), elastomers, or synthetic rubbers. These materials exhibit excellent resistance to abrasion, erosion, and chemical attack, leading to prolonged lifespan and reduced maintenance requirements.

Low Friction and Torque Requirements: Well-designed butterfly valve seats provide low friction between the disc and the seat during operation. This characteristic reduces the torque required to open or close the valve, enabling smooth and energy-efficient valve actuation.

Temperature and Chemical Resistance: Quality butterfly valve seats are engineered to withstand a wide range of temperatures and chemical environments. They exhibit excellent resistance to extreme temperatures, making them suitable for high-temperature and cryogenic applications.

Compatibility and Versatility: Manufacturers of quality butterfly valve seats offer a range of materials and designs to accommodate diverse applications and fluid handling requirements. The seats can be customized to suit specific operating conditions, such as high-pressure or high-temperature applications, aggressive fluids, or hygienic environments.

Installation of Rubber Valve Seat

Valves can be installed in any orientation however it is best if it can be installed upright especially in bigger sizes to reduce load on the shaft caused by the actuator or gearbox trying to pull away.
It is common for smaller butterfly valves to be mounted in various orientations eg water trucks. This is fine and is common practice.

Verify the material of the butterfly valve, seat and disc before installation. Ensure that there are no defects caused by storage or transportation.

Verify the pressure rating of the valve vs the application requirement.

When installing directly to a pump or another valve be sure to have a pipe spacer between them to allow for the butterfly disc to open.

Complete all welding works before valve installation and be sure the flange has cooled to ambient temperature before installing the butterfly valve.

Make sure there is no welding residue, waste, rust or other debris in the pipe before installation. Wash with water or a mild detergent if needed.

Clean the surface of the flange that will come in contact with the butterfly valve to ensure it is free of rust and debris. Wash with water or a mild detergent if needed.

Make sure there is no warpage of the flange or misalignment of the butterfly valve in relation to the flange. This is the most common cause of butterfly valve problems where it is not aligned with the flange/pipe correctly and the disc catches when trying to open/close. Support the valve where necessary to reduce load from the piping assembly.

Install spacing bolts taking care not to damage the valve seat and adjust the face to face of the two flanges so there is space when the piping is spread open (enough space to remove the valve or replace it for maintenance).

Once the pipes are centred, insert the bolts so that the bottom of the valve can rest upon them to prevent the valve from falling through.

Before tightening the bolts operate the valve to ensure it does not catch on the pipework or the flange.

Tighten the bolts one at a time doing it in stages so even pressure is applied and a seal is formed between the valve and flanges.

Once the installation is complete operate the valve several times to ensure it is free from impingement and it has not moved during installation.

Factors to Consider in Selecting Rubber Valve Seat Material

Selecting the right material for a valve seat is crucial in ensuring optimal valve performance and longevity. The following factors should be considered when selecting materials for valve seats:

Operating temperature range
The material used for the valve seat should be able to withstand the specific application's operating temperature range without degrading or losing its mechanical properties.

Pressure rating
The material used for the valve seat should be able to withstand the system's pressure without deforming or experiencing fatigue failure.

Chemical compatibility

The valve seat material should be resistant to the specific fluid or media that flows through the valve. This prevents chemical reactions that can cause corrosion, erosion, or degradation of the valve seat.

Wear and abrasion resistance

The valve seat material should be able to withstand wear and abrasion caused by the valve disc moving against it during opening and closing operations.

Cost and material availability

The cost and availability of the material used for the valve seat should be considered to ensure that the valve is not only efficient but also cost-effective.

How Rubber Valve Seats Work?

A rubber valve seat is a type of mechanical seal that is used to prevent the leakage of fluid or gas from a valve. It does this by creating a tight seal between the moving parts of the valve and the stationary parts.

A valve seat is the part of a valve against which the seal rests. The seat is typically made from a hard, wear-resistant material, to withstand the high pressures and temperatures in valves.

Rubber valve seats and seats are essential components in various industries, such as oil and gas, power generation, and water treatment. In these industries, valves control the flow of fluids or gases. If a valve is not sealed correctly, the fluid or gas can leak out, leading to costly repairs or safety hazards.

Over time, rubber valve seats and seats can wear out due to the high pressures and temperatures they are subjected to. Valve seat replacement is essential for the valve to function properly. Otherwise, the valve will not operate correctly, resulting in significant issues.

The Service Life of Rubber Valve Seat

Under normal circumstances, the service life of the general rubber valve seat is about 15 to 20 years, and that of the metal sealing valve seat is about 80 to 90 years. The proper choice of sealing seat should base on the specific working conditions. The relationship between the opening degree and the flow rate of the butterfly valve is linearly proportional. If the butterfly valve is used to control the flow, its flow characteristics is also closely related to the pipes' flow resistance. For example, if diameters and types of two pipes to be installed are the same and loss coefficients of them are different, the flow of the two butterfly valves will also be greatly different. If flow of the valve is large, the back of the valve plate will be prone to cavitation, which may further cause damage to the valve.

When the butterfly valve is half opened, the opening shape of the valve body and the front end of the butterfly plate is centered on the valve shaft, and the two sides are formed in different states. One side of the butterfly plate moves in the downstream direction, and the other side moves in the upstream drection. Therefore, one opening is nozzle-like and the other opening is throttle-orifice-like. The fluids flow faster on the nozzle-like opening side than that on the throttle-orifice-like opening side. In addition, the negative pressure usually occur on the throttle-orifice-like opening side, which will cause the peeling off of the rubber butterfly valve. The operating torques of the butterfly valves are different due to the variety of the opening degree as well as the opening and closing direction. The torques resulting from the factors such as the horizontal butterfly valves' depth of water, especially those valves with large diameters valve, can not be ignored. In addition, if inlet sides of valves are equipped with elbows, bias flow will form and torques will become large. When the butterfly valves are half opened, their operating mechanisms need to be self locked due to the torque of water flowing.

7 Common Reasons Rubber Valve Seats Fail

The importance of high-quality valve seats can't be over-emphasised since failure can be costly, inefficient and time-consuming when resolving any issues and in the most extreme environments explosive and life threatening. There are many reasons why rubber valve seats fail; read on to find out the most common:

Poor material choice
Various plastic materials are used in the manufacture of valve seats. Choosing the wrong material for the required application can lead to failure. Different applications and operating conditions place different requirements on the valve seat material. Prior to choosing a material, it's important to study the physical properties of the available materials to ensure the most suitable option is chosen for a particular application. We provide valve seats manufactured from a range of materials including ptfe, peek and vespel to name a few.

Poor seat design
The valve seat is the most critical component of any valve. Simply, if it doesn’t work, the valve doesn’t work. Consequences can range from minimal leakage or shortened life span to catastrophic failure. Depending on the media and environment this can have explosive and life-threatening consequences.

Poor soft seat carrier design
Many valves utilising soft seats use an outer metallic seat carrier with the valve seat insert pressed or moulded into it. There are many benefits from this type of design, but get the design wrong and you can be chasing your tail trying to figure out why your seats are failing when in fact its seat carrier design to blame. Poor design of the seat carrier can ultimately lead to valve seat failure.

Failure to understand the way materials behaves at pressure and temperature
When selecting the correct material for your valve seats, factors that must be taken into account include the media, the pressure at which the valves will be operating and the temperature range of the application. High and low temperatures and pressures and combinations of both will have an effect on the durability, functionality and longevity of the valve seats and valve. A common cause of failure is not taking into account these factors.

Permanent deformation
Often when using soft seats for very high-pressure applications, a procedure of valve setting is required. This is a process where the valve is repeatedly actuated in part of the build process in a manner to cause the permanent deformation expected to take place in the seat during a period of normal use. Then the valve is rebuilt and set to the parameters required for on-going function.
Often failure to understand the initial and permanent deformation of the valve seat materials can cause a valve to fail via its seat, not the first time its is used but through on-going use. This confuses manufacturers who have tested valves in their factories with no issue only to find that when they hit the field application they fail on installation.

Cold flow
One of the most commonly used materials for valve seats is ptfe. It's inert to almost all chemicals and has a wide range of temperature applications and excellent sealing properties. However, the downside of ptfe is its cold flow resistance. Similar to point 5, a valve can slowly deteriorate in performance leading to failure and this is caused by the cold flow of the seat material during cycling and use. This can be overcome via seat design and correct selection of a filled grade of ptfe less susceptible to cold flow.

Excessive friction/torque
The friction between the seats and the ball directly affects the torque required to turn the ball valve. In a ball valve, a minimum seal force is required to prevent leakage. However, excessive circumferential seal force can cause accelerated wear and increase the torque requirements. As temperatures increase, the pressure between seat and ball increase, leading to greater friction.
In the most extreme circumstances, the valve can become locked in position, being unable to be closed or opened and as the torque is increased, mechanical failure of the seat occurs as it is torn to pieces inside the valve. This is why the choice of material for application is so important.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Rubber Valve Seat

Q: What is the purpose of a rubber valve seat?

A: In simple terms, the rubber valve seat is the seat for the air intake valve and air exhaust valve. It is the part that makes contact with the valve, and maintains the airtightness of the combustion chamber. Tightly holds when the valve is seated, prevents compressed gas or combustion gas leaking into the manifold from between the valve and valve seat.

Q: Rubber valve seat: What is a valve seat vs seal?

A: A valve seal is a type of mechanical seal that is used to prevent the leakage of fluid or gas from a valve. It does this by creating a tight seal between the moving parts of the valve and the stationary parts. A valve seat is the part of a valve against which the seal rests. The seat is typically made from a hard, wear-resistant material, to withstand the high pressures and temperatures in valves.

Q: Do you know the types of valve seals and rubber valve seats?

A: Valve seals and valve seats come in various materials, including rubber, metal, and plastic. The type of seal or seat you need will depend on the application. For example,
Rubber seals are often used in automotive applications to handle high temperatures and pressures.
Plastic seals are often used in aerospace applications because they are lightweight and have low friction.

Q: How do I know if my rubber valve seats are bad?

A: If the issue with your faucet is a bad valve seat, you are likely to encounter issues with water dripping from around the handle area. The leak may occur whether the faucet is on or off. When this is the case, it is time to call in a plumbing pro to replace your valve seat so you can stop losing water.

Q: When should rubber valve seats be replaced?

A: Rubber valve seats should be replaced when they are pitted, chipped, or too damaged to re-cut. Seat replacements are also necessary when they have been cut multiple times and are now too deep to set proper valve clearance. Additionally, it's common to replace stock steel-based seats with those made from superior materials to improve performance and durability from the engine.

Q: What happens when a rubber valve seat leaks?

A: Like any part of your machinery, the rubber valve seat can undergo wear and tear over time, which affects its functionality. One of the most common valve seat problems is leakage (which can occur even when your valve is off). If left unaddressed, excessive valve seat leakage can interfere with production and can ultimately lead to unplanned downtime.

Q: Why do rubber valve seats fail?

A: There are numerous reasons why rubber valve seats fail – some include poor installation practices leading to incorrect seating, which affects sealing effectiveness over time; prolonged exposure to harsh operating conditions such as excessive heat or corrosive elements from substances being transported through valves; inappropriate material choice not suitable for specific operational needs; wear due to continuous use without proper maintenance among others.

Q: Are rubber valve seats removable?

A: If you've been working on cylinder heads for any time at all, you've had to remove a rubber valve seat insert or two, so you know it's not an easy job. Those suckers are in there tight – and they're supposed to be – but that makes it tough to get them out when you need to. There are a few ways to get the inserts out, which I'll touch on briefly, but one of the newest and fastest ways is to use your 3-D Fast Cut™ System (or other 3-angle cutting system) to cut the inserts out without damaging the counterbore.

Q: How do you diagnose a bad rubber valve seat?

A: Conducting a cold engine test.
Increased smoke levels.
More oil consumption.
Engine idling.
Compromised acceleration power.
Engine misfiring.

Q: Can you reuse rubber valve seats?

A: Valves are exposed to harsh conditions, and when you consider how many strokes (cycles) these parts may have already withstood over the hundreds of thousands of miles during their previous
Service life, it is a pretty strong argument for not reusing them. This graph shows the general operating temperature an exhaust valve can reach. As the temperatures increase, the hardness of the various materials decreases.

Q: How are rubber valve seats reconditioned?

A: Partial reconditioning will involve a grinding of the sealing area, and a re-chroming or hvof coating of the valve stem. Full reconditioning involves the complete rebuilding of the valve seat area and of the bottom of the disc by welding. Re-chroming or hvof coating of the valve stem is also included.

Q: How to lap rubber valve seats or re-seat rubber valve seats

A: Step 1: Remove the valves from head.
Step 2: Insert valve.
Step 3: Identify the tone changes.
Step 4: Identify which port the valve has lapped.

Q: How to maintain rubber valve seat?

A: Do not expose rubber seats to sunlight or ozone for any extended period. Valve should be stored with the disc or closure member slightly open. Make sure flange faces and joint sealing surfaces, body seats and disc seats are clean. Check bolting attaching actuator to valve for loosening in transit and handling.

Q: Can you repair rubber valve seat?

A: Not all valves are removable. If it has a square or hexagonal hole or a slot for a screwdriver, it's a replaceable valve seat. If the valve seat is not removable, you need to resurface the valve seat by sanding or grinding down the valve seat. Or you need to replace the old system with a new faucet.

Q: How to tell if rubber valve seats are bad?

A: Conducting a cold engine test: One of the best ways to tell if you have a faulty valve seal is to conduct a cold engine test. After your machine hasn't run for a while — even overnight — the seal is now cool. Once you start the engine, the seal will contract. Damaged seals will leave a small gap.

Q: What are the benefits of using rubber valve seats and valve seats in crude oil applications?

A: Improved Product Quality: By controlling the flow of crude oil during processing, valve seals and seats help to ensure that the final product meets the required standards.
Reduced Processing Time: By reducing the processing time, they can help to improve efficiency and save money.
Increased Safety: Help protect workers and equipment from potential hazards.

Q: Rubber valve seat:Why remove the original inserts?

A: Over the years that i've run into four fairly common reasons for replacing original seat inserts:
They're already loose.
They're worn or damaged.
The head is cracked and the insert will be compromised when repairing the crack.
The seat has been machined to the point that proper specifications can't be achieved.

Q: What factors should be considered in the design of rubber valve seat?

A: Consider the following during rubber valve seat product design:
Temperature
Fluid exposure
Surface finish
Compression set
Durometer
Substrate bonding
Seal geometry
Abrasion resistance

Q: Why use rubber for valve seats?

A: Rubber offers several advantages over other valve seat materials.
Flexibility: Rubber conforms to uneven surfaces and creates a reliable seal when there are slight imperfections in the mating components.
Durability: Some rubber compounds can withstand harsh environments, including high temperatures, pressures, and corrosive fluids.
Noise reduction: Rubber absorbs vibrations, dampens noise, and contributes to smoother operation overall.

Q: Choosing the right rubber valve seat: It's not just black and white?

A: Rubber valve seats can be made from many different types of rubber to achieve the performance characteristics that your application requires. In addition, these small but important components can be bonded to just about any substrate (including metal) to reduce assembly costs and improve function.
