Technical Dive: Overcoming TR-10 Retraction & Low-Temperature FKM Embrittlement
Around -15°C to -20°C, standard FKM materials (such Viton A) experience a glass transition (Tg), during which the polymer chains become brittle, lose flexibility, and experience rapid seal blowout under dynamic pressure.
Glass Transition (Tg) vs. TR-10 (Temperature Retraction):
The TR-10 value (ASTM D1329) is the final technical standard for low-temperature sealing capability, even though Tg shows the beginning of stiffness. The temperature at which a stretched, frozen elastomer retracts by 10% is measured as TR-10. Even after prolonged sub-zero exposure, SJK Low Temperature FKM compounds guaranty seal recovery with a proven TR-10 rating down to -30°C to -45°C.
Modification of Specialized Oligomer Copolymerization:
SJK substitutes perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether (PAVE) low-temperature monomers for conventional fluoropolymer monomers in order to ensure reliable performance over the whole Viton GLT O-ring temperature range (-40°C to +200°C). Without compromising fluid resistance against aggressive fuels, synthetic oils, and sour gas, this cutting-edge copolymerization process breaks the hard polymer crystallization at low temperatures.
