What are encapsulated or coated O-rings?
SJK SEAL supplies a wide range of rubber seals, O-rings, oil seals, piston and rod seals, rubber diaphragms.
They are actually two different types of O-rings. Encapsulated O-rings are O-rings (usually silicone or FKM) covered with PTFE tubing. Encapsulated O-rings are specifically designed to solve the problems of sealing the harshest chemicals and extreme temperature applications. Encapsulated O-rings consist of a solid or hollow elastomeric core encapsulated in a PTFE FEP or PFA jacket. Solid core encapsulated O-rings are typically used in static applications. Hollow silicone core encapsulated O-rings are typically used in applications that require lower sealing forces, such as semi-dynamic applications. Encapsulated O-rings provide an effective solution for many difficult applications. The PTFE FEP or PFA encapsulation actually affects the seal, while the elastomeric core ensures consistent compression of the seal. The result is overall seal compression that increases with moderate pressure. Encapsulated O-rings behave like a highly viscous fluid and any pressure exerted on the seal is transmitted in all directions. The maximum operating temperature is 205°C (400°F) for FEP and 260°C (500°F) for PFA.

Package O-ring dimensions comply with international O-ring dimensional standards. Encapsulation does not increase the cross-sectional area compared to standard elastomers of the same size.
Coated O-rings have a Teflon coating that adheres to the O-ring (usually silicone or FKM), while encapsulation involves a layer of Teflon tubing covering the O-ring.
The PTFE coating of the O-ring is an ideal low-friction coating where operational flexibility is a major consideration. PTFE also offers other advantages, such as:
- Correct identification on the assembly line
- Easy to install
- Reduce running-in torque
- Reduce costly "breakdowns" in automation systems
- Reduce initial running friction
- Eliminates sticking of parts after long-term storage
- Reduce ring distortion during installation
Coatings typically come in standard blue, medium blue, light blue, white, purple, red, yellow, medium green, dark green, grey, clear, black, orange, tan, pink and green/gold.
